MAS-WRESTLING

Mas-wrestling is a form of martial arts that originated in Yakutia. It is stick tugging by two athletes. They sit in front of each other with their feet propped against a Jamb Board. At a referee’s signal they try to tug their opponent to their side or pull the stick out of the opponent’s hands. The key to mas-wrestling win is to keep the balance and unbalance the opponent. For this, there is movement of the legs along the Jamb Board (athletes call this “running along the board”), work with the body and hands, when the stick is twisted horizontally and vertically (according to the rules, only up to 90 degrees).

Who We Are

It is important that the opponent does not snap out the stick in the first seconds. Athletes need to have the ability to react and make decisions quickly in order to counterattack rapidly. An athlete can even throw his opponent to his side, for this there is a technique when the athlete, pushing his feet into the Jamb Board and lifting the center of the body weight, creates an additional leverage force.

Each meeting lasts up to two rounds and may consist of two or three bouts. The modern name for this type of martial art was proposed by the first Olympic freestyle wrestling champion from the Sakha people, Roman Mikhailovich Dmitriev. The word “mas” means “wooden stick” in Yakut and “wrestling” means “wrestling” in English.
